The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social and Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq has presented 150 hand washing kits to inmates of the Medium Security Custodial Centre.

This is part of exercise to commemorate the 2020 World Global Hand washing Day.

The theme for the 2020 World Global Hand washing Day is “Hand Hygiene for All”.

Presenting the items which contain one bathing soap and a pocket hand-sanitizer each, the Minister said the gesture was to inculcate the habit of routine personal hygiene to all classes of the public through washing of hands.

The Minister who was represented by the Deputy Director Disaster Management, Dr. Abubakar Suleiman said with the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, hand washing will help prevent the spread of the disease.

The Minister said to mitigate the spread of the novel COVID-19  frequent hand washing with soap under running water for a duration of about twenty seconds is key.

In a keynote address, the Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu stated that the visit to the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje is to ensure that in line with this year’s theme,  everyone, everywhere, including inmates, have access to hygiene facilities as a basic necessity.

According to him, hand washing with soap reduces the incidence of lots of communicable diseases including the COVID-19 infection.

He urged stakeholders at all levels to raise the awareness on hand washing as this would lead to the needed behavioral change, thereby producing a healthy society and an economically buoyant nation.

The Comptroller General of the Nigerian Correctional service, Ja’afaru Ahmed who was represented by the Deputy Controller General in charge of works, Yusuf  Abubakar said the facility is indeed elated to host such a significant occasion at a time when there is global pandemic which is greatly mitigated through the increased awareness of hand washing.

Ja’afaru appreciated the sponsors of the program, Ministry of Water Resources and the Humanitarian Affairs Ministry for always putting the facility in their plans of water supply programmes. He also commended other development partners for choosing the less privileged of the society and the Medium Security Custodial Center, Kuje for the flag off.
